About the owners Sam & Roger Newton (Father & Son Team)
Roger has been cyclist for more than 40 years, starting with a touring club exploring the UK and Europe then velodrome, road racing circuits and cyclo-cross for some off-road riding, as the MTB seen started he started mountain biking and has competed in both national and state level events.
Equipped with a substantial cycling background. Roger is a Cycle Skills coach, Cycle level one in road and mountain biking, Certificate 4 outdoor leader (MTB remote) and a Trainer and Assessor (TAE) for The Outdoor Education Consultants and Sunshine Coast Tafe. Roger has a blue card, first aid qualifications and extensive experience in coaching and working with large groups of people, young and old. Roger leads the team at Get Cycling. Roger moved to Noosa in 1996 and and opened a bike shop called Mammoth cycles. He sold this in 2000 As Noosa bike hire and tours was developing along well. This eventually turned into Bike On Australia with 230 bikes and 4 staff. he sold Bike On in 2012. Now Get Cycling keeps him busy. Roger is also part of many community groups including, Qld chair person for Cycle Tourism Australia’s project manager, Sunshine Coast council’s Noosa trail Network MTB group, Sunshine Coast Bicycle Reference Group and Queensland’s Parks & Wildlife Services- Noosa trail care working group. Roger is also a member of the Sunshine Coast Cycling Club, Bushranger’s Mountain Bike Club & Noosa Trailblazers. |
Roger Newton honoured in Australia Day Celebrations

On Sunday January 25th 2009 at Lions Park, crowds staked their spot with tents, blankets and fold-up chairs before Mayor Bob Abbot presented the Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards. Roger Newton received the Sport and Recreation Award for his significant contribution to the health, well-being and bike education of the Sunshine Coast, in particular the outdoor recreation community. Roger promotes sustainable transport and healthy living not only through his educational programs but with all who come in contact with his business. Roger was the man behind Bike On Australia and Noosa Bike Hire and Tours, established on the Sunshine Coast since Oct. 1996 to Dec. 2012 Source: www.thedaily.com.au The Brisbane City Council Award for Outstanding Achievement (Organisation) Roger Newton former owner of Bike On Australia was recognised for the significant contribution it has made to the health and well being of the Sunshine Coast community by winning the coveted Brisbane City Council Award for Outstanding Achievement (Organisation). Roger Newton, was the owner of Bike On Australia since Oct. 1996 to Dec. 2012, said Bike On had evolved into a total cycling experience owned and run by people who have a real passion for cycling. Bike On Australia staff give generously of their time back to the community and regularly conduct free bike information and education seminars. They are actively involved with council groups such as the Noosa Bicycle Advisory Group and the Noosa Trail Network which promote cycling and improved infrastructure for cyclists. They have established a local working group and are partnering with the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service to make the local trail network more accessible and sustainable. |
